Orex

From 1978–1999, Mecanica Fina was the only watch manufacturer in Romania. The company was based in Bucharest and produced wristwatches under the commercial names Optimef, Cromef, Clasic, and Orex. Early watches were powered by Chinese Sea-Gull movements, while later production used Soviet watch calibers, including Slava (2414, 2628, 2428, 2356, S2358) and Zaria (2009).

The Orex brand — a portmanteau of Ora Exactă (“exact time”) — was launched in 1985. In the 1990s, after a dramatic sales decrease, a resuscitation of the company was attempted by manufacturing a model with 21 jewels (Slava caliber 2414), likely intended for export markets. The movement was supplied by the Second Moscow Watch Factory. Ultimately, this resuscitation attempt proved unsuccessful, and in the year 2000, Mecanica Fina stopped wristwatch production and became privately owned.
